World Environment Day activities in India

By SCI India Maharashtra State Group

Service Civil International Maharashtra State Group observed World Environment Day on Monday 5th June. Although it was probably a working day for most of the SCI Volunteers, they still gathered together for this noble cause.

Activities were spread in multiple cities of the Maharashtra state: Latur, Nashik, Pune, Kudal, Titwala and Mumbai. In Latur, volunteers planted trees in a village. These SCI volunteers are teachers of a government school in the area. Similarly in Pune and Vikhroli (Mumbai), SCI volunteers attended in large numbers to plant trees.

In Titwala, the same activity was carried out by SCI volunteers in collaboration with another NGO: Jeevan Dhara, and in (Mumbai) with Chandra Surya Trust, in addition to watering existing plants and distributing saplings to participants.

In Nashik, students from different schools gathered together, prepared paper bags and distributed them among nearby shops and families to give the message that a plastic-free city is possible. Students were also given Ayurvedic saplings to use to create a pure atmosphere. Similarly, in Kudal-Sindhudurg, volunteers distributed paper bags to shopkeepers to encourage them to adopt environment-friendly practices. In addition to that, together with NGO Jeevan Anand Sanstha, SCI volunteers took up the cleaning of a busy square. These activities contributed to spreading the SCI message all over India’s Maharashtra state on the occasion of World Environment Day.

We are thankful to the NGOs we partnered with and the many new volunteers who ensured this year’s World Environment Day was a success
